President's Corner - Jan 2001
philip yanov, KG4FOZ

As I write this, January is nearly upon us. Plans for New Years Eve include getting together with friends, enjoying a bit of cheer, reflecting on the interesting and unexpected events of the past year, and making plans and resolutions for 2001. My first President's column of the new year will be pretty much the same.

I'd like to start by thanking last year's officers and board for their effort not only for the Blue Ridge Amateur Radio Society but for Ham Radio in general. It was a difficult transition year, yet the board kept their heads above water. I'd like to thank the outgoing officers for their efforts.

The board has already met for 2001and are busily making plans for 2001. We have received some great meeting ideas from the members and are working hard to make the meetings infotaining. I could have said informative and fun, but like squeezing the terms together. I don't want to leave either one out. Look for the meetings to have both beginner and and advanced topics. We want to make sure there is something for everyone. If you have meeting ideas, be sure to share them with our Vice President, Johnny Allison. Johnny is coordinating speakers and topics this year and would love to hear from you.

Also, we think there are still quite a few Amateur Operators who either don't know about our meetings, or may have forgotten to make time for it in their busy schedules. If you know of a Ham who hasn't been to meeting in awhile, be sure to invite him (or her) to a meeting. In this club, like most others, more is better so spread the word.

In case it does not appear elsewhere in this issue, be sure to note that this month's meeting has been moved one week to avoid having a meeting on New Years Day. The January meeting is on Monday, January 8th at 7:30 PM at the Red Cross Building on Grove Road in Greenville.

It is time to pay your dues? Since everyone's dues come due in January, I should probably offer a friendly reminder. Your dues make the activities of the club possible, including the newsletter, our meeting place, the repeaters, Field Day, our Ham Fest, and much more. Paying your dues early helps us plan for the year, so send your check today. By the way, we appreciate having you as members, and intend for all club activities to be worthy of your support. If you ever feel we missed the mark, let me know.

If sitting in front of a computer monitor would give you a tan, I would be a bronze god. My best guess so far is that it just makes my hair fall our, starting from the front. The good news for you is that I can frequently be found online. If you have questions, comments, suggestions, or any Elvis sightings to report please feel free to send them to me via any of the methods below. -philip yanov, KG4FOZ, 864-246-0468, or phil@philyanov.com

Minutes of the December 11 Meeting of the BRARS, Inc. Board Meeting

Attending: Phillip Yanov, Johnny Allison, Al Holden, Buddy Rodgers, Tommy Ellison, and Gary Goudelock, Phil Robinson, Gretchen Ellison, Bob Watson
Absent: Carlisle Rogers, Ed Grooms, Al Lemmons
Guests: Wanda Allison, Dan Donovan, Ray Allison

Meeting called to order by out-going President Johnny Allison and he turned it over to in-coming President Philip Yanov. Philip handed out current constitution & by-laws to all present. Made clear that board meetings would be open to all club members to observe, but if they want to speak, they must schedule it with the Secretary.

It was noted that Dan Donovan had been doing the publicity for the club this past year and he was asked if he would like to continue as long as he had his releases approved by the President before he let them go.

New members approved by the board and to be voted on at the January 2001 meeting:

Carolyn Deweil KF4KAY
Glenda Phillips KF4GGH
Scott Bell W4ALW

Bob Watson reported that dues were being collected for next year.

Phillip wanted any ideas on a membership drive. It was suggested that by listening to 2 Meters we would all hear any new hams or non-members that could be invited to join the club. Buddy Rodgers made the motion that business-type Club cards be printed for the club to distributed at local businesses and by all club members. Forty dollars ($40.00) was allocated for the cards. Motion was seconded and passed by the board. Phillip Yanov volunteered to design the card.

The question of an editor for the Livewire newsletter was brought up and Phil Robinson volunteered to take it over, but as he is computer-less, he couldn't do it at the present. Dan Donovan said he would compose it, but he did not have time to do the mailing. It was decided to leave it as with Sue Chism N4ENX as editor. It was also suggested to encourage all members who are capable to receive their newsletter by e-mail. Philip will check with Jonathan Nalley on the status of the BRARS, Inc. web page.

The treasurer was not present, but Philip reported that he would like: 1. Starting balance 2. $'s taken in 3.Expenses 4. Ending balance.

Johnny Allison gave a report on the programs for coming year.

Al Holden reported that he is still hunting for a public address amplifier. Phil Robinson said he would check on one he knew about.

The repeater committee consists of: Ray Allison, John Chism, Al Holden, Tommy Ellison & Terry Lambert. The progress of getting a 440 receiver for controlling the repeater was reported. Ray will talk to John about getting one.

Johnny suggested that a repeater interference committee be formed and that will be done at another meeting.

January Club meeting will be on the 8th; Repeater committee will meet on the 10th; Board meeting will be on the 15th. Bob Watson will check on and secure a meeting room for 2001 at the Red Cross Building.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectively submitted,
Gretchen Ellison, Secretary
